This song sprung from a visit to Gullane where I had a momentary vision of the sands that went back thousands of years. I started singing, "I'm a Stone Age Man!". From there the song arrived one day many months later.I demoed it and eventually sent it to Dave Guild who rebuilt the track from that demo and then we took it to where it is now.
I remembered a poem that I was sent by a friend that was written by the Dalai Lama - The Paradox of Our Age - and riffed on what I remembered of it.
I love the potential of technology in human life, but I do feel that it can get in the way of being alive. We haven't quite worked out the balance of technology to benefit our everyday lives yet. We're still fighting wars, in debt, polluting the atmosphere, driving around in circles and essentially enslaved by our advances in technology. I don't want to go back to nature and be a Stone Age Man, so much as embrace who we are and where we are going.
lyrics
Stone Age Man
Take back all your mobile phones
Noone talks face to face anymore
Take back all your motor cars
You're moving fast but you don't get far
Take it back
Now take it back (take it back)
Take back all your aeroplanes
I'll learn to fly using my own brains
Take back all your tv sets
Don't talk to me on the internet
Take it back
Now take it back (take it back)
Cause I'm a Stone Age Man
Yes I am
Cause I'm a Stone Age Man
yes I am
Move out of the city
Move out of the city and onto the land
Take back your 9-5 honey,
I'm making time while you're chasing the money,
Take back all your guns and your rifles
I'm making love while your killing for oil
Take back all religious fools
I'll make my way by the sun and the moon
Take back all the subs and the loans
I owe nothing but to myself I am born
Take it back
Now take it back (take it back)
Take back all the gold for our freedom
I'm making nothing but this hunger for being
Take back all religious fools
I'll make my way by the sun and the moon
Now take it back (Take it back)
Now take it back (take it back)
Cause I'm a Stone Age Man
Yes I am
Cause I'm a Stone Age Man
yes I am
Move out of the city
Move out of the city and onto the land
